Diet: week 7, Pip turns 15 months, meeting baby Mason

Things are going well with the diet! I lost 2 pounds last week and I lost 1.2 pounds this week. So far, I am down a total of exactly 17 pounds! I still have a long way to go but that's a pretty good start, I'd say. At 20 pounds, I am going to "reward" myself with something small - not exactly sure what yet, but I'm thinking on it for sure!

Piper turned 15 months old today! Where does the time go? It seems like just yesterday she was a newborn and now she's walking and starting to talk! We did end up finding the pink seahorse this week - in my sweater drawer, placed under a bunch of perfectly folded sweaters. I'd been in the drawer several times and both Mitchell and I had checked and RE-checked the drawers and we still didn't see it! I only found it because I went to find a sweater at the bottom of the drawer and lo-and-behold, there it was! Piper was SO excited when I showed it to her - she didn't let it go for at least half an hour, ha!

Speaking of newborns, I got to meet little Mason today! He is such a sweetheart. He is so adorable and just snoozed the afternoon away. I would be lying if I said it didn't make me long for another newborn, but the timing is not right so for now, I'll have to enjoy him instead, ha! Josh & Michelle have a beautiful new home! I hadn't been yet and it is really, really nice!  We enjoyed our visit this afternoon.

I'm thinking about enrolling Piper in "Mommy and Me Gymnastics" but I'm not totally convinced yet. It's kind of pricey, but there isn't a whole lot for tiny tots to do in this town. Between the playgroup and story time at the library, the only other thing I've found is the gymnastics so I'm really considering it. It wouldn't be for long, anyway, since we plan to start the job hunt in TX soon. Decisions, decisions!

Mitchell and I finally watched Up! tonight. We've been wanting to see it for quite a while but finally got the chance to see it. I liked it but it's definitely  not what I was expecting! Talk about a sad way to start a flick, sheesh!

We had a busy, busy weekend but it's back to the usual swing of things tomorrow! :)

Valentine's Day isn't so bad. Quit your belly achin'!

You know, I hear it every year. I'm sure you do, too. "Valentine's Day is just a made up Hallmark holiday." or the "I don't need a special day to tell the person I love how I feel, I should do that EVERY day".

So what?

Why do people feel the need to put a damper on something good? Something sweet, something innocent, something that's supposed to be fun? Let's face it - there's a lot of doom and gloom in our world right now. Any chance at focusing on the good is reason enough to celebrate if you ask me!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not exactly jumping up and down excited that it's Valentine's Day. No, it's not my favorite day of the year. No, we didn't have any big plans. But that doesn't mean I'm going to gripe about it all day long every February 14th.

If nothing else, it's a good reminder to let our loved ones know how much they mean to us. What exactly is the harm in that? Even if you're single, Valentine's Day doesn't have to be a drag. Use it as an excuse to tell your friends and family how much they mean to you instead!

Every holiday is a marketing ploy by the big box stores, let's face it. But we don't let that ruin Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving, do we? Mother's Day and Father's Day are also "made up holidays", just like Valentine's Day, but no one seems to gripe about those. They are special days that we set aside to recognize the people we love and I think it's terrific.

I guess I just don't understand the widespread negativity toward what is supposed to be a day about love, happiness, and recognition of one of God's commandments (faith, hope, and love - we all know which is the greatest of the three!).

Lighten up. Enjoy the day. Indulge in the chocolate and appreciate the beautiful flowers and jewelry. If you aren't into giving gifts (and there's nothing wrong with that!) - enjoy the time with the one you love a little more than usual. Give them an extra kiss, an extra hug, and do or say something extra special to remind them how important they are to you.

There's no harm in allowing yourself to enjoy a  "stupid Hallmark holiday". ;-)  Hallmark said it best in their commercial this year, I think. “It’s not for saying I love you. It’s for saying I love us. I love who we are together.”

Happy Valentine's Day!

Diet: week 5 & Mitchell update, and other happenings

I don't have nearly as much time to update my blog now that we're home, I'm afraid. I keep meaning to do it but other things crop up and it just doesn't happen. Sorry about that!

It has been a bitter cold week here in KS! Actually, we had gorgeous weather for three days last weekend and then it got nasty real quick. I was starting to go stir crazy being cooped up in the house but it finally warmed up yesterday and Piper and I left the house just for something to do. I would never take her out when it's -30 windchill for no reason, but it sure stinks being stuck in the house!

Piper lost her pink "seahorsey" early this week and that was quite the conundrum. Thankfully, it's not a one-of-a-kind item and can be replaced or we would really be in a world of hurt right now. I couldn't find a pink one here in town so I had to buy a blue one, but it'll work until we find the original. It has to be in this house somewhere because Mitchell checked the dumpsters twice and it never left the house in a diaper bag or anything. I'm sure we'll laugh when we figure out where it was, but for now, we're still duped! "Seahorsey" is the best $12 I've ever spent, that's for sure!

As for the weight loss, last week when I weighed in, I had lost exactly two pounds. I also lost exactly 2 pounds this week! Yay! Since January 4th (the day I started Weight Watchers), I have lost a total of 13.8 pounds! I've still got a lot of work to do but it's a good start! I am starting to notice small differences so that's encouraging.

As for Mitchell, he is doing well.  The burned skinned has mostly healed and the bruising has gone away. Strangely enough, his tumor has been really aching during the bitter cold weather we've had, so that's unfortunate. His skin is starting to scar from the radiation but we knew that would happen. All in all, he is doing great and we are glad to be finished with the radiation. He will still need surgery at some point, but for now, we're going to celebrate the first milestone, and hope the radiation did it's job.
